On April 30, 2020, the issue of releasing and appointing a member of the General Election Commission (GEC) was discussed during the plenary session of the State Great Hural of Mongolia.
According to the Law on Central Authority for Election, the GEC of Mongolia is a 9-member commission appointed by the State Great Hural and members serve for a 6-year term. The Parliament’s Standing Committee on State Structure nominates 5 members, the President nominates 2 members, and the Supreme Court nominates 2 civil servants to be members.
Non-staff members of GEC, R.Sodkhuu and U.Enkhtur were relieved of their post and S.Baatarjav and B.Baasandorj were nominated as non-staff members of the GEC.
The candidate Baasandorj Barsuren, born in UB in 1979, has been serving in the public service for 18th years. He graduated from Law School of the National University of Mongolia as a lawyer in 2001, and the California International University in 2011 with MBA. He had worked as an analyst, advisor and senior advisor to the Secretariat of the State Great Hural of Mongolia in 2001-2013, the head of the Legal Policy Department of the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs in 2013-2015, senior adviser of the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs of the Secretariat of the State Great Hural in 2015-2018, and the chairman of the General Authority for State Registration since 2018.
Members of the State Great Hural expressed support for the non-staff members of the GEC and stressed the importance to be politically independent and to act within the law during the election.
